Hailing from Brooklyn, alt-pop act frau asks “what do you want?” on the lead single from her forthcoming debut album, flutter. An ode to and exploration of the familiar, dizzying fear of being seen, the track is an authentic and vulnerable psychoanalysis of overthinking another’s motives and affection.
“Navigating relationships, platonic or otherwise, comes without direction. In the beginning, delicate and volatile– not likely to last more than a few moments or a few months,” frau explains about the track. “Do they want to be around me because they genuinely see and accept me, or is there an ulterior motive? The song explores those early bouts of uncertainty, the fear of being too honest too soon, and learning to accept love from someone willing to be just as vulnerable.”
Born in Nashville and hailing from the world of Kidz Bop and school choirs, the producer and artist trades polished pop perfection for something far more atmospheric, unnerving, and relatable. Clocking in at just over four minutes, the track acts as a slow meditation on the fragility of making new connections and –as the internet loves to say – “embarrassing yourself” in the anxious pursuit of human connection.
Featuring a 90 bpm pulse and a grounded bass line, the track cultivates in a beautiful world of guitar and electronic space. The production – a process shared between frau, brand0, and Michael Deano (SZA, Remi Wolf) – layers velvet vocals with complex embellishments like delicate stringed instruments to magical backing arrangements.
The track is refreshing, serving as a promising look at the “tender chaos” to come when flutter arrives on September 4th. It’s available to stream everywhere on Wednesday, May 6.
