Miley Cyrus gives us ‘Something Beautiful’ — Album Review

Date:

Recommended tracks: “Easy Lover,” “Walk of Fame,” “Reborn”
Artists you might like: Demi Lovato, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande

Disney legend and GRAMMY-award winning pop sensation Miley Cyrus reclaims her power on Something Beautiful — her most cohesive project to date. The record is crafted with seamless transitions, each track effortlessly bleeding into the next, creating a cinematic listening experience. Cyrus is fiercer than ever, defying expectations with a skipless 13-track run including standouts “More to Lose,” “Walk of Fame,” and “Reborn.”

Something Beautiful does not chase a radio-ready hit, but rather serves as a testament to Cyrus’ songwriting and vocal abilities to create a timeless body of work. Cyrus made it a priority to reconnect with the Smilers, taking back control of her social media accounts to engage with fans and invite them into this new chapter of artistry. The “Flowers” singer teamed up with TikTok to hand-pick a group of lucky fans to attend a private listening party and performance at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles ahead of the album’s release.

After Cyrus won her first GRAMMY, she felt freedom to explore textures and sounds, taking inspiration from Pink Floyd’s The Wall. This new era began with the retro-pop dance track “End of the World.” “This, to me, is pop music in its fullest form,” Cyrus shares. The song was written for her mom, Tish, and explores taking life one day at a time, inviting listeners to pretend it’s not the end of the world.

“More to Lose” and “Easy Lover” are cut from the same cloth. “More to Lose” lays out the devastating feeling of losing a relationship in a powerful ballad. The sultry jazz track “Easy Lover” narrates the idea of a partner being too difficult to love, yet hard to give up: “You make it hard to touch another (you make it hard) / Anything goes when we’re under covers (covers) / But you’re not an easy lover.” The single is accompanied by a music video directed by Cyrus, Jacob Bixenman, and Brenden Walter. It incorporates choreography by Stephen Galloway for the first time since Hannah Montana.

No one is going to put Cyrus in a box, and that is crystal clear on this record — it’s a genre-blending journey through 70s folk, disco, rock, and techno. “Walk of Fame” stands out as a disco-laced pop anthem that explores the power in walking away from people or situations that no longer benefit you: “Yea, I could grab my coat / And head out towards the train / By every time I walk, it’s a walk of fame.” From the first note of “Reborn,” it radiated a theatrical 70s nightclub vibe that sounded like it was straight from a Lady Gaga album.

“Every Girl You’ve Ever Loved” replicates the feeling of being hyped up by your friends, like every step you take is a strut on the runway. Naomi Campbell creates the ultimate validation with lines “She has the perfect scent” and “She speaks the perfect French.” Cyrus will have Smilers around the globe singing, “I’m still looking like a ten / While my hair is a mess / And I’m gonna work it all night / ‘Til I get what I want.”

Fans are invited to come together in theaters for one night only to experience Something Beautiful: The Film, following its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 6th. Grab your tickets at mileycyrussomethingbeautiful.com
