Melodic Magazine got a special invitation on Friday, August 23 to attend singer/songwriter Stephen Sanchez’s press conference, where we discussed the release of Angel Face (Club Deluxe), his favorite movie (currently Lost In Translation, and who can blame him?), and his nationwide “Stephen Sanchez & The Moon Crests” tour.
“I’m such a romantic as it is, so I’m kind of operating out of that…always,” Sanchez explains. In discussing the Club Deluxe version of Angel Face, we learned that the inspiration from the project drew from both real life and hypotheticals. Playing the “Troubadour Sanchez” character allows the character in the album to be more three dimensional and cathartic. We see this in “Until I Found You” with Evangeline and the (spoiler alert) eventual demise of Sanchez. As with Taylor Swift’s trifecta of songs – “betty”, “cardigan”, and “august” in folklore – had popularized a couple summers ago, pulling from fiction allows for more interesting and fun storytelling.
Along with the stories in the album, the tour mimics an alternate life. Inspired heavily from the styles of the 1950s and 60’s, Sanchez explained that the experience of dressing up to the nines was a nice touch. He states, “it’s been really cool, really unique tour among all the other tours going on.” Really diving headfirst into a style or look as part of an album further intensifies the commitment Sanchez has to this album, and it shows. He explained that across cities and countries, the reception of the live performances has been overall a positive one.
Speaking on how Stephen Sanchez defines success, his definition revolved around selling out shows, and while not too much has changed, there was an addition of wanting “to be around people, write songs that mean something to people and mean something to him.” To be successful now has been a blessing and it’s more of a gift, and not a thing of ego.
