Though Ashley Anne no longer tries to outrun her past, her new EP GENERATIONAL HEARTBREAK finds her learning instead to sit with it as she continues rising in Nashville.

Between the early buzz surrounding her single “paloma,” support from Carly Pearce, Avery Anna and Laci Kaye Booth, and a forthcoming songwriter cut on Pearce’s next album, Anne’s story feels especially timely. With this release, she continues to carve out her place in the genre.

The 22-year-old Virginia Beach native shared that she moved to Nashville four years ago, thinking she would leave behind all her childhood trauma. Instead, she says that those experiences followed her.

“About a year in, I realized I carry a lot of that with me in all aspects of my life,” Anne said. “I’ve worked on healing and coming to terms with a lot of it, but I think it will always be a part of me, and that’s okay. It has made me who I am and there is fruit in that.”

Anne’s six-track EP begins with “love looks like,” a song centered on rewriting your idea of love. What begins as a reflection on chaotic, doomed relationships gradually shifts, as she starts to understand that love can also be steady, peaceful and kind.

Staying tied to the feeling of missing someone unconditionally, Anne later deals with jealousy and insecurity on “paloma.” The song carries a deep vulnerability to it, despite its fun, light tone, as Anne feels intimidated by someone who seems effortlessly cool and questions her own place in a relationship.

As the EP progresses, Anne leans further into heartbreak and reflection. From how to phone a friend and losing that sense of security, Anne shines most on the closing track, “nevermind,” a subtle yet devastating song. Between the louder moments earlier in the project, both emotionally and literally, Anne slips into a soft crescendo that plays like a balancing act.

It becomes a turning point for Anne — one filled with regret and self-awareness after ignoring red flags and beloved promises. It’s less about the other person and more about recognizing her own patterns. In that moment,  illusion cracks and self-awareness begins, which is exactly what the EP seeks to explore.

Interwoven with themes of generational trauma, heartbreak and personal growth, GENERATIONAL HEARTBREAK combines country-pop with singer-songwriter intimacy. Rather than offering easy answers, Anne explores the tension between self-doubt and healing, light and darkness, showing what it means to grow through experience rather than beyond it.
