In the world of dark pop, Precious Pepala is quickly rising to the top as one of the genre’s most prominent stars. Renowned for her signature blend of soft melodies and rock-inspired compositions, Precious conveys her own unique take on alternative pop.

On January 31, Precious released her latest single, “Lullaby.” A haunting yet captivating track, “Lullaby” is an introvert’s anthem, encouraging listeners to embrace their introverted nature in a world that is not well-designed for the reserved. A dark yet slightly humorous song, Precious wants listeners to think of her new release “as if a Tim Burton movie became a pop song.” With lyrics that convey a longing for solitude and self-love for an introverted nature, “Lullaby” proves to be as cathartic as it is charming.

“Sing a lullaby pour sand into my eyes
Don’t wake me up unless somebody dies
Turn out all the lights and leave me sleeping tight
Don’t wake me up until I die

Is it bad is it sad
I’m the happiest I am when I’m asleep
Rest in peace for me”

At just 19 years old, the Sheffield-based alt-pop star is steadily making a name for herself in both the pop and rock music scenes. As she brings together multiple genres, including pop, rock, soul and gospel, Precious is offering a bold, dangerous and enticing take on popular music. Furthermore, as a Black female artist who continuously explores themes such as mental health, religious trauma and rape culture in her work, Precious is bending genres as well as societal barriers through her artistry, even though she admits she is, “not the stereotypical face of power and change.”

“Lullaby” is Precious’ latest musical effort since her previous singles “Sunday Morning” and “The Effect,” both released towards the end of last year. Both releases follow her debut 2023 EP Eve and reflect a new musical era for the “Pls Cheat On Me” singer. Weaving together a variety of musical genres and spinning them into her own eerie sonic web, Precious has well-proven herself as one of the most exciting young talents to emerge within the pop and rock music scenes.

With family roots in Zambia, Precious was born and raised in Sheffield, England, first beginning her music career singing in her father’s church. Pulling inspiration from ’90s icons such as Aaliyah and Destiny’s Child as well as modern-day figureheads like Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish, Precious has drawn influence from all of these artists to create her own blend of retro aesthetics and performance art. An artist who is as intentional as she is talented, it will be exciting to see what Precious puts on our musical radars.
