Great Good Fine Ok teamed up with Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness to explore heavy themes of fear and insecurity in their newest single “Let’s Talk.”
“Let’s Talk” is a vulnerable open dialogue of different concerns that plague the musicians. They reflect on anything and everything surrounding family, health and career struggles and the nihilistic perspectives on these ideas. Essentially, the singers are “just trying to keep it real.”
The two acts mask deeply introspective lyrics behind groovy indie-pop guitars and synths. This track relies on reflections of relationships with loved ones, whether that be familial or romantic, and realizing these bonds can aid in understanding oneself: “The more I love somebody the more I wish I knew myself.”
The chorus lends itself as a window into self-destructive tendencies with “I’ve been here before/…I keep closing doors,” to the feeling of hopelessness in “how to move on when you’re face down on the floor,” before reaching a hand out for recognition in, “I wish we were talking more.”
The track offers insight into the personal insecurities about the finality of life and the legacy one leaves, even in its material form. They offer up, “hope the cancer comes back / When my kid’ll be left with nothing,” one of the most gut-wrenching lyrics hidden behind the otherwise upbeat sonic tone of the track. Despite grappling with existential dread and many of these internal conflicts, the singers follow the final line in the chorus as they reach out for help, realizing they have someone they can fall back on, in the second verse. They sing, “if I’m being honest, I knew you would save me.”
They sing, “I can handle this,” in the bridge as they learn communicating in these relationships can help them get through their concerns: “If you’re there we can share the way.”
Great Good Fine Ok and Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness are having the difficult conversations in “Let’s Talk,” a carefully crafted call for honesty with the ones you love.
