With their shared background as producers and DJs, it seemed inevitable that Zack Gray and Andy Kautz would cross paths. Zack started releasing solo singles and collaborations in 2017, paving the way for his debut album, Imperfect Love, in 2019. After that, he performed at Life is Beautiful, landed coveted features with Ones To Watch and EARMILK, and found himself on editorial playlists like Apple Music’s Melodic Bass. Overall, his music has over 30 million streams to date. Andy, on the other hand, has been more on the down-low. He signed with Sony BMG shortly after graduating from the Berklee College of Music in 2012, his masterful ability to blend emotive piano music with electronic soundscapes catching the ear of Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. Since then, he has been working with some of the biggest names in pop music, but is now ready to release his own solo project. Teaming up with Zack, Andy is making his official debut with the release of “Whatever It Takes.”
Drawn from Andy’s personal experience, “Whatever It Takes” is about coming to terms with a past relationship. Over delicate piano and ambient synth, Zack walks us through an unexpected connection with an ex, singing, “It’s been so long since I heard your voice” and “All that I gave was not enough.” The emotion builds as Zack serves us with, “Whatever it takes, you want love / For all your mistakes, you want love.” Before we can recover, an industrial electro-dance chorus kicks in, offsetting such gentle verses. It is a musical journey just as much as it is an impassioned one. You can check it out below.
