Maris talks about her love for Boston, and her new stellar single ‘Give Me a Sign’

Date:

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down in person and chatting with superstar Maris on a tour stop in Boston, as part of Maude Latour’s Sugar Water Tour. Maris’ love for Boston runs deep, going back to playing her first ever music festival at Boston Calling which was such a special moment. She hails from Missoula, Montana originally and has been making waves in the music industry for awhile. Now working out of LA, Maris has released countless bops like “Was it a Dream”, “False Idol”, “The Fight”, and “Julia Roberts”, amongst many others. In 2023 she released her fantastic debut EP Gravity- which was accompanied by Gravity: The EP: the Movie, a beautiful short film for the EP. She went on countless tours in support of the EP including opening for Anna Of The North, as well as The Wrecks. She performed at Boston Calling and Missoula Pride in the summer of 2024 as well as opening for Melt on their tour in the fall.

Now fast forward to 2025 and Maris has just released the fabulous new single “Give Me A Sign” featuring Caroline Kingsbury. A queer anthem about the nerves of making the first move on a new crush. It’s so refreshing seeing a queer artist like Maris make such cool meaningful art and we love to see it. For our interview we chatted about the new single, being back in Boston, doing the interview in asmr, inspirations, and her proudest moment in the time we had together. Check it out below along with some portraits we snapped before her show!

Before the interview starts both Maris and I joke about talking in an asmr style whisper voice for the interview- which we attempted to do before we burst into laugher and then we locked in.

Melodic: Welcome! Glad to chat with you! So you’re back in Boston again, a place you have had a lot of special moments in, what’s it like being back here?

Maris: Thank you for having me! Oh it’s so good, I’m happy to be back! I love the East Coast, honestly the weather here is way better than when we were here last time, it was fucking freezing as fuck last time we were here so I’m happy to be in Boston in the spring, it’s really nice and we always stay with my drummer’s family in Arlington which is really sweet so I love being back in Boston it’s so fun.

Melodic: You’ve worked with the Boston Music Project before when you’re here, which I love to see and it seems so fun what’s that been like?

Maris: Yeah I mean it’s pretty important to me, I grew up in Montana and when we wanted to put on like a music thing it always had to be fundraised and we really had to work for our funding you know, and I was looking up when I was playing this big festival (Boston Calling) I was like well if I’m gonna play this crazy big festival and just like come into this place I need to like learn who the actual music heroes are. And they bring music lessons to kids in schools that normally wouldn’t get them because of redlining so it’s an honor to work with them I love them.

Melodic: You recently released your stellar new single Give Me a Sign-

Maris: Have you listened to it?

Melodic: Oh my god of course- when it was on your Soundcloud secret album, I listened to it and I was like, ‘are you kidding me this is my song’! its so amazing.

Maris: It got the most streams out of all the songs the fastest!

Melodic: It’s such a bop. I love that it’s like a queer anthem, and you got to work with Caroline Kingsbury on it who is also amazing, what was it like working with her?

Maris: She is my ADHD queen. She is chaos and sunshine and rainbows and bubbles and fireworks and I adore her so much! She asked me to come write for her project and so we were in a session and we were writing and I was like actually I have this song, I really need a feature for it and I would love for you to like listen to it and maybe you’d like it, I don’t know. She’s like “let me hear it”. I played it for her and she’s like “I need to be on this song” and so then she came in like a couple days later and cut the vocals on the second verse and then I had so much fun like directing the video with her because she’s so fun and beautiful on camera and just the best energy so working with her has just been amazing and we’re going to continue to work together so I’m excited to share!

Melodic: We’re excited to hear!

Melodic: Going back to your other songs- Which song of your entire discography would you say is your favorite right now? (released or unreleased)

I love them all for different reasons. A song I have coming out soon called, “Mary and I“, might be my favorite. I spent a whole summer celibate and stoned and doing a lot of introspection, a lot of journaling, and a lot of work on myself. And it is a song that kind of illuminates that joy, but also that simultaneous kind of codependent relationship I developed with weed over the summer. And so I’ve really taken a step back now and I’m like, okay, you can fucking hit the pen after five haha but I love that song.

Melodic: Excited for it to come out!

Maris: Me too!!

Melodic: Let’s talk inspiration- Who is an artist you think you draw inspiration from?

Maris: Definitely like Queen. I love Freddie Mercury just as an icon in general. I get compared to Chappell Roan a lot, which is cool cause I think she’s fucking amazing. But I feel like I pull a lot from older artists. I pull a lot from Whitney Houston. I pull a lot from Prince. I pull a lot from One Direction too. Directioner till I die bitch haha I love one Direction. But yeah I would say definitely inspired by older artists.

Melodic: For our last question before we run out of time- What has been your proudest moment so far in your career?

Maris: oh my god, the proudest moment of my career so far is probably working with the Boston Music Project because every time I go see those kids, it just reminds me of like, my job is not to be perfect. My job is to connect and my job is to facilitate joy. And as long as I’m doing that, I can’t beat myself up over mistakes that I make because I have a tendency to do that, like I get off stage and rip through myself and be like, this moment sucked and this moment sucked and this moment sucked. But now that I do the Boston Music Project, or honestly, like when I’m talking to fans at merch and they’re wearing stars and they, reference the songs and stuff, that feels like huge to me.

Melodic: Well thank you so much for taking the time to sit and chat, it was a such a pleasure, can’t wait to see what you do next!

Maris: Thank you so much for having me it was so fun! Hope you enjoy the show!

Regarding the show we definitely did enjoy! You check out our show review and photos from the show here! Maris was a pleasure to talk to and is absolutely the sweetest. We can’t wait to see what she has in store next, we already know it will be iconic.
