Nessa Barrett enters her raw and theatrical side on ‘Jesus loves a primadonna’ — EP Review

Date:

Recommended tracks: “Moulin Rouge,” “High On Heaven,” “Buffalo 66”

With Jesus loves a primadonna, Nessa Barrett further commits to the musical style she has been developing.

With a darker take on this style, the entire project from front to back is a performance. It’s a work of contrasts as moments of sweetness mix with melodrama. Barrett’s vocals are sweet and purposeful as she glides over the dark production, which is more focused on the mood rather than the moment. Jesus loves a primadonna is an immersive piece of work that invites the listener into this world of contrasts.

One of the standout moments of the EP comes with “Moulin Rouge,” a song that is very much in line with the record’s fascination with love as both fantasy and destruction. Barrett goes all in with hyper-romantic language about Vegas weddings, love, and desire. There is a sense of recklessness to this track, which is heightened by the way the song repeats language about the interplay between pain and pleasure, giving it a hypnotic quality.

Throughout the EP, Nessa Barrett wrestles with themes of identity, control, and perception. There is a clear progression in the writing that she brings to life on this project; rather than simply writing about her emotions, Nessa now analyzes them. This gives the EP a level of sophistication, taking it above the typical dark pop tropes. There is even a level of restraint in the way she delivers each line, even during the more dramatic moments.

Jesus loves a primadonna is a solid progression for Barrett. It’s a project that was born from duality, intimacy, performance, polish and rawness. Rather than confronting the duality of her character, Barrett celebrates it, creating an EP that’s at once self-examining and unapologetically theatrical.

Fans in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Toronto have the chance to celebrate this new project from Barrett for her short series of “the live unveiling of Jesus loves a primadonna” shows. These dates are officially sold out.
