Seattle-based musician SYML continues to promote the release of his upcoming LP, Nobody Lives Here, due out April 4th, with the release of his new single “Carry No Thing.” SYML describes his latest release as an “apocalyptic love song,” as it brings to light the contrast between love and the chaos and destruction of what’s going on in the world around us. He shares more about the message of the song:
“The intangible force of love is what we take with us as we move through the chaos. There’s a strange beauty in some of the ways we imagine the world ending. I think it might be that it’s something we would all experience equally at the same time. Whether we run for the hills or submit, we only have the love for each other as the world burns around us.”
“Carry No Thing” starts off slowly, with some electronic elements swirling around the listener before SYML’s classic folk-inspired vocals come in. The subtle soundscape of the first 30 seconds allows the vocals to come to the forefront, making the message of the lyrics clear immediately.
The instrumentation of the song builds beautifully, first with the addition of some simple guitar strums and piano keys. As the song builds up momentum, though, we’re carried forward by what sounds like a tambourine and some perfectly timed cymbal crashes, emphasizing key points in the song. A subtle drum beat ushers us all the way through the instrumental bridge and the final chorus before the song starts to come full circle by stripping back down. SYML softly sings the title lyrics, “I will carry no thing but my love for you,” over a soft finger-picked guitar and some light piano keys to close us out.
SYML’s talents not only as a songwriter but also as a producer truly shine through on this track. He seamlessly weaves the instrumental elements together in a way that builds tension but keeps them from ever becoming overpowering, keeping the listener’s focus on the lyrics and staying true to the message of the song throughout. “Carry No Thing” has a cinematic feel to it, as you can almost imagine yourself walking in slow motion through the chaos around you towards the one you love.
