Rainbow City Park explores introspection on debut EP and title track “Fruitless”

Date:

Good news for fans of Phoebe Bridgers, Diiv and Pinegrove: the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree. Rainbow City Park—a Northern California-based indie rock/dream pop band—released their debut EP and title track “Fruitless” on Feb. 4, 2025, drawing inspiration from the 90s alt-rock scene while making it their own.

The fresh four-member band—composed of Chris O’Keefe (guitar), Ryan Williams (drums), Dani Judith (lead vocals, guitar) and Nick Nassab (guitar, vocals)—formed in 2021 and released singles like “Broken Record/Dad Jeans” and “Convince You” in 2023, alongside hitting the road to reach audiences with their newly developed sound. Notably, that same year, they supported Japanese Breakfast and The National Parks at Sacramento’s free music festival, Concerts in the Park.

In the spring of 2024, Rainbow City Park set their minds to producing their debut album, Fruitless, working with Mike Davis—a producer who’s also collaborated with Pool Kids, Lo Moon and Great Grandpa—for a week in the Panoramic House Studio.

In “Fruitless,” the introduction is straight to the point, bringing the alt-pop/rock vibe to life with a fast-paced, bright guitar riff and an energy-matching drum beat that carries through the entire track. With lyrics like, “I’ve been giving this all I’ve got / But it never seems to be enough,” this song voices the struggle of giving something your all but not being rewarded for your effort. The intensity of the driving drums mirrors the frustration and anger tied to fruitless endeavors, which can be both consuming and difficult to battle.

Rainbow City Park does an excellent job creating a complete package for this feeling, thoughtfully crafting instrumentation, lyrics and vocals that align perfectly with the theme.
