Kylie Rothfield’s new single, “Never Loved Somebody,” is soulful, twangy, and so much more

Date:

On her Instagram, Kylie Rothfield posted, “Pov: a year ago you thought about giving up music, but you’re about to release the first single off your new album, and life feels like a dream.” You can now stream her new single, “Never Loved Somebody,” on all platforms.

In 2015, Kylie signed her first publishing deal and featured her songs on ABC, NBC, MTV, and E! Network. She frequently shares updates on Instagram about her songwriting and album creation process. Now, we can finally see the culmination of her efforts with the release of her first single.

“Never Loved Somebody” expresses the loss of love for someone who did not deserve it in the first place. While one side puts all the time, effort, and care into the relationship, they’re simultaneously receiving nothing in return. It feels like they’ve truly never felt love for someone else, or else they’d know how to show it by now: “You like me better now because you know I’m leaving / How does it feel to carry all the power / And you don’t even want it.”

Rothfield shares her powerful and soulful voice, complemented by a twangy slide guitar that enhances the single’s emotional vibe. She delivers a relatable message about letting go of someone who isn’t good for us. As her layered vocals resonate with the fuzzy guitar melodies, she sings: “You never loved somebody / And if you don’t change / You’ll never love nobody.”

Alicia Keys once described her as “a blossoming, powerful flower with so much heart, so much talent, so much emotion and vocal power.” So, it is no surprise that we end up right there with her as she paints pictures of her time spent with this bitter subject and the contrasting beauty physically surrounding her as this relationship seems to crumble: “It must be nice / To be like you / The winner always has less to lose / You’ll be the same with someone new / You couldn’t change if you wanted to.”
