Maudlin Strangers’ release new single, “Under My Skin”

Date:

Yet another band that resonates with the Arctic Monkeys’ alternative indie-rock spirit: Maudlin Strangers’ new single, “Under My Skin,” exudes the tiring theme of being stuck in a toxic relationship and still staying, even though we all know we deserve better: “I let you in / I do it time and time again / Make yourself at home / And I wonder why its gotta be like this way / Believing everything you say.”

The single battles the thought of making a change; in this case, breaking up with your toxic partner to better your own life. Instead, you stay in an unhealthy relationship, letting it tear you apart, which is ultimately probably the harder option: “I prayed to God / I’ve never prayed to God before / I made my bed / So now I’m sleeping on the floor / Say your goodbyes / Settle your debts /  You belong to this world now / Get used to it.”

The tone and filtering of the lead singer Jake Hays’ voice sounds eerily close to Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys, in a way where they should just consider being a cover band at this point. Maudlin Strangers is made up of friends Alexander Morgan (guitar), Drew Buchs (bass) and Richie Gonzales (drums). From LA, the band breaks the mold just enough to be described by BuzzbandsLA, “If you’re looking for electro-pop that is darker than most but still sparkles enough to be worthy of a pool party soundtrack, then Maudlin Strangers… might just do the trick.”
