Heather Mae Immerses Us in a Queer, Coming-Of-Age Love Story

Heather Mae is a Nashville-based artist elevating her story of queer joy and resistance to the surface with her powerful new single entitled “kissing girls”. It’s a coming-of-age soundtrack to Heather’s life that recounts her early experiences with love and relationships. “kissing girls” captures the euphoric joy of a first crush and the layered emotions that surfaced while growing up queer in a southern church community.

“kissing girls” draws together a pulsating beats, transcendent vocals, and effervescent electronics that immerse you in a rush of emotions. Mae sings, “Cause I’ve been kissing girls as long as I’ve been kissing boys / And I don’t know why / I kiss and tell / About every one except the ones I felt.” The music video is a moving profile on healing Mae’s inner-child as she cathartically sings everything she held back as a child in the loving environment of a home, surrounded by loved ones who celebrate her with open arms. “kissing girls” sheds light on Heather Mae’s experience as an LGBTQ+ artist and pushes toward queer visibility in all corners of the world.

Revealing more on her track, Mae confides, “Growing up in church and the evangelical movement, the only representation of LGBTQ+ people that I was familiar with were the kids who got kicked out for being queer. Even though my first crush was on a girl, I hid the truth of what that meant to protect myself from losing my entire community. This is why visibility is profoundly important to me.”

Heather Mae is committed to uplifting female and queer voices and shedding light on the disparities – particularly between male and female producers – within the music industry. Females only make up about 4% of music producers. To counteract this shocking statistic, Heather Mae has developed a group of female artists and producers in Nashville to fight back against the status quo.
