Given a lineup made up of Daniel Davison, Mike Weiss, and Bryan Taylor, you might be forgiven if you were expecting Unless to deliver the more frantic, aggressive catharsis that defined their collective experiences in Norma Jean, Underoath, Every Time I Die, The Chariot, and mewithoutYou. Instead, their debut single and music video, “Sun Gone Low,” arrives with something far more surprising, and way cooler.
Rather than chasing pure volume, the track begins on a subtle, danceable pulse that steadily builds before introducing Davison, who trades sprawling drum fills for a tight, hypnotic rhythm, laying down a steady floor for Weiss’s unmistakably ambient, textured guitar lines. But it’s Taylor’s vocal presence that really shifts the temperature: smooth, melodic, and wrapped in a slow-burning tension that gives the song its subtle, rhythmic pull.
The video feels strangely fitting. Shot in freezing temperatures on a Philadelphia rooftop at Somascape Studio in December 2025 and co-directed by Tes Hash and Daniel Davison with cinematography by Joe Grasso, the video pairs light projections against a dark city skyline and the band themselves. For longtime followers of the members’ music, there’s an immediate warmth in watching Weiss lose himself in the movement again, swaying and dancing with his guitar in a way that feels nostalgic.
If you listen closely, you can trace quiet threads of their combined musical pasts; however, the overall sound of “Sun Gone Low” feels wholeheartedly new. Unless has managed to carve out a distinct lane that feels fresh, polished, and genuinely hard to compare to other music being released right now. It is a standout first impression that sets an exciting bar for what is to come.
