After spending this last year climbing the ladder of the modern rock circuit, Dexter and the Moonrocks announce that their debut full-length album, Friends That I Don’t Like, will arrive October 2 on Severance Records and Big Loud Rock. Alongside the announcement, the band shares their latest single, “It’s A Lot.”
Continuing to build upon their signature anthemic sound — a musicality that the group themselves aptly describe as “western space grunge” — Dexter and the Moonrocks’ newest single intertwines brutally honest lyrics with catchy alt-rock hooks.
“‘It’s A Lot’ is about whatever the listener needs it to be about as always, but to me it hits on what has happened over the past year,” guitarist Ryan Anderson says of the new track. “The effort put forward to make the most of a life-changing moment, though worth it, brings all brand new challenges. We couldn’t be more thankful for where we are now, but to four kids from small-town Texas, sometimes it can be a lot.”
Friends That I Don’t Like will include “It’s A Lot” as well as previously released tracks like “12 Steps” and the band’s now RIAA Platinum-certified hit “Freakin’ Out.” On Thursday, August 20, Dexter and the Moonrocks will make their late-night television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where they will play “Freakin’ Out,” their viral hit that launched them into mainstream rock stardom.
Since gaining serious traction after the release of “Freakin’ Out,” the Texas rock band has been praised for their unmistakable sound, one that is equally nostalgic and innovative. Blending grunge influences with a raw, 2000s rock energy, the quartet prove that they refuse to abide by the rules of any one genre.
“For a long time, people have been struggling to place us as a band,” drummer Fox says. “Coming up in the Texas music scene came with its own expectations and stigma. We always seemed to piss off the honky tonkers and underwhelm the old school metal heads, and to be quite frank, we never cared. People kept telling us we had to lean one way or the other, or else no one would ever care. This album feels like a culmination of us tuning out all the bullshit and just being the four blue-collar rockers from small-town Texas that we always were. This album feels like an ode to everything we love about our upbringing and everything we wanted to change when we were young. We couldn’t be prouder of the work we’ve put in, and our ability to stay ourselves. I couldn’t tell you what Dexter And The Moonrocks means. Are we country, grunge, alt rock, southern rock? Honestly, who cares. All I know is that we’re here and we aren’t going anywhere.”
