Known for their rebellious pop-punk sound and heavy hyperpop influences, Waterparks have long maintained an artistic ethos of refusing to ever settle for less. Not long after their 2011 formation, the trio solidified themselves as strong up-and-comers in the modern indie rock scene, becoming a staple Warped Tour act in the 2010s and touring alongside the likes of Never Shout Never, Sleeping With Sirens, and All Time Low in the years to follow.
Over the last 15 years, the band has released a total of five full-length albums and three extended plays, earning significant praise and continuously expanding upon their genre-defying sound with every release. Today, Waterparks share JINX, their highly anticipated sixth studio album, on BMG. Directly following 2023’s INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, JINX was initially meant to be a sequel to INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. However, after building the project and tearing it apart again numerous times, Waterparks were forced to make a complete artistic shift, pushing through creative hardship to put together one of the band’s most intentional bodies of work to date.
Through preceding album singles like “RED GUITAR” and “BETTER THAN THERAPY,” the group — composed of vocalist/guitarist Awsten Knight, lead guitarist Geoff Wigington, and drummer Otto Wood — showcases a heightened sonic maturity. Exploring a multitude of themes ranging from love, identity, the music industry, mental health, and more, JINX balances fiery nonconformity with heartfelt vulnerability, a dichotomy that Waterparks have since become synonymous with.
Opening with the theatrical “TELL ME WHY,” JINX starts off in bold musical excess with features from blink-182’s Mark Hoppus and famed composer and songwriter Danny Elfman. The snarky “IF LYRICS WERE CONFRONTATIONAL” and the hyperpop “NOBODY BUT YOU” offer a light balance to the heavier rock tracks like “GWEN STEFANI” and “PROWLER” that are included on the record. Ultimately, JINX embodies wide-ranging influences, eccentricity, and sharp lyricism — everything that Waterparks has become known and loved for.
To promote the record, Waterparks are currently on the road for a run of album release shows, hitting Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, Orlando, Houston, and New York City over the next couple of weeks. While no album tour has been announced at this time, there’s no doubt that Waterparks will continue to have excitement on the horizon with their latest monumental release.
