Through their eclectic sonic identity — one that they have aptly trademarked as “Western space grunge” — Texas-based outfit Dexter and The Moonrocks have launched themselves into modern rock stardom, decorating a twangy alternative sound with just the right amount of interdimensional sparkle.
With a musical palette that dives into a wide array of influences, Dexter and The Moonrocks — composed of James Tuffs, Ryan Fox, and cousins Ryan Anderson and Ty Anderson — attract music fans across all subcultures. Goths, punks, metalheads, indie rockers, and country fans all admire the grungy resonance of the group. Since their formation in 2021, the band has continued to build both their fanbase and their momentum, constantly working to break into the music scene and beyond their rural hometown of Throckmorton County.
Releasing their debut self-titled EP in 2021, Dexter and The Moonrocks eventually signed on with Severance Records, an offshoot of Big Loud Rock, in 2023. Releasing their highly successful Western Space Grunge EP the following year, the group released two subsequent EPs — Happy To Be Here and Donkey Flats — in 2025. However, it wasn’t until this year that the band faced levels of fame and glory they had never seen before.
Their single “Freakin’ Out,” released back in March, became a massive hit, climbing up to #33 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and earning the No. 1 spots on Billboard‘s Emerging Artists chart and Alternative Radio. Earning massive critical acclaim, many have regarded “Freakin’ Out” as the song of the year, and the track has cemented Dexter and The Moonrocks as one of 2026’s breakthrough bands. Just recently, the song even earned RIAA Gold Certification, marking a huge milestone for the group.
Continuing to ride the high of their success, the band are currently in the midst of an extensive run of shows slated for this year. With appearances at Summerfest and Cottonfest already crossed off their summer bucket list, the band will play a select number of shows supporting Turnpike Troubadours before embarking on a run of headlining shows through the remainder of this year.
In the midst of this ongoing buzz, today Dexter and The Moonrocks share their latest single, “If You Could Talk,” alongside its coinciding music video. Building further upon their raw, hard-hitting sound, the band’s latest release captures listeners through gritty acoustic guitars and grungy vocals.
“The song, ‘If You Could Talk,’ and what it means to me is about having a family back home that you never get to see,” Tuffs says. “It’s about what a conversation would sound like with your son if he knew how to talk, or whoever it may be. Everyone has something they are leaving behind when they hit the road, and this song is about all of those endless struggles that come with that.”
It’s crystal clear that Dexter and The Moonrocks are well on their way to become one of the most exciting breakthrough stars in rock ‘n’ roll. And with talks of a debut full-length album soon to follow after their steady release of recent singles, there’s no doubt that the excitement around the group should continue to grow.
