Anderson Hao debuts a quiet triumph with “maybe”

Date:

Up-and-coming indie pop artist Anderson Hao returns with a subdued, yet resonant sound in “maybe.” Following her 2024 album, out of slogans, which featured her signature acoustic guitar plucks and captivating melodies, Hao has returned with a fresh, new sound while still staying true to her original style.

“maybe” was the first song the singer wrote after losing her house and music studio in the California fires in January. After moving into a new home, Hao began working on new music, and her new neighbors were seemingly not too happy about. When in the middle of tracking the guitars, Hao was yelled at by a neighbor, not-so-politely requesting them to turn it off.

This single is a strong next step in the rising star’s career. The simple yet haunting melodies perfectly encapsulate the tone of the song and are effortlessly complemented by the restrained instrumentation. Drawing comparisons to artists like Ella Jinks and Samantha Marie, Hao continues to carve out her space in indie pop with organic songwriting that feels both personal and relatable.
