Healy’s “Running Laps” is a stunning piece on self-introspection

Date:

After a 2-year hiatus, Ethan Healy, better known as Healy, makes a striking return with “Running Laps.” The song is a beautiful exploration of self-sabotage, the struggle to break old habits, and the yearning for self-reinvention. It touches on topics that, no doubt, will resonate with many listeners going through similar phases in life.

The rhythmic guitars and upbeat drums contrast with the mood of the lyrics. The lyrics depict a troubling mental state, whereas the overall tone of the song is quite optimistic and lively. This creates a stunning paradox between the excitement of growing and developing as a person, while still struggling to move on from past feelings and habits.

The vocals are warm, vibrant and dynamic, effortlessly guiding the listeners through the arrangement. This track showcases Healy’s impressive vocal range, from his understated, resonant tone in the verses, to his warmer, brighter tone used for the higher melodies in the bridge and chorus.

Hailing from Memphis, Tennessee, Healy has made a name for himself, gaining stamps of approval from the likes of SZA and Khalid. His unique take on indie pop and R&B has garnered him a significant following since his first release, Subluxe, in 2017.
