L.A-based indie rock band Your Favorite Color dropped their first release of 2025 on Feb. 27: the anxiously riddled song “Bleach.” Having returned from touring with The Driver Era, this new song utilizes the band’s talents as songwriters to create a boomy and raw sound.
The first verse’s use of imagery perfectly sets up the rest of the song with the well known cliché of being “trapped in a cage” setting the stage for the chorus. The powerful lyrics, “Everything I want to say to you / tastes like bleach,” in the chorus strike listeners quickly with the anxieties over redemption and forgiveness, which are perfectly summed up in the two lines. The second verse switches perspective outward as the band states “I was really hoping you wouldn’t turn.” A change in energy in the pre-chorus keeps with the excitement, “my mind running circles as you beg me to stay.” The lyrics let listeners know how much the band has grown since their debut album last year, with each line working off the others beautifully.
Another signifier of the band’s growth is the overall sound and production. The boomy drums at the start of the song being cut out by the filtered guitars, keys and bass create a tension let out in the chorus. The distortion on the guitars gives the song its raw edge against the glittery synth lead and keys. Yet, this would all sound loose if not for the bass line that ties each element in the mix together.
Your Favorite Color’s “Bleach” is an incredible look into guilt and anxiety with some well-thought-out lyrics and production design. You can listen to can listen to “Bleach” now.
