Committing to the synth-pop sound that they have developed over the years, Los Angeles duo THE DRIVER ERA teases energy and excitement for their upcoming album Obsession in new single, “Same Old Story.”
Easily the main focus on this song are the synths, that all work together to give “Same Old Story” its character and magnetism. The main synth present from the first verse creates a movement that the electric keys could not achieve on their own. That’s not to undermine the keys, which ensure that the soundscape is always full throughout the song. In the chorus, a sparkly wave synth offers a good contrast to the main, helping break up the verses and emphasize the change of energy. Working with the synths is a panned electric guitar with a sharp tone. The soft but noticeable presence of the guitar is a staple of THE DRIVER ERA. Making sure that the mix stays tight and poppy, the hi-hats and snare used in the drums are crispy rather than boomy.
THE DRIVER ERA pair this instrumentation with a catchy melody and lyrics about reuniting with a recurring old flame. The second verse, “throwback, deja vu / me and you” keep the melody short and moving, helping aid in the upbeat spirit of the song. THE DRIVER ERA don’t need to spend too long on their lyrics with the clear center of attention being on the overall mix, as it is with most synth-pop music.
THE DRIVER ERA have already established themselves as talented artists and this new albums looks to be no different. “Same Old Story” gives fans of the pop duo a taste of what appears to be a more steadfast synth-pop sound of upcoming album Obsession.
