Love You Later is stuck in the past in “Mouth To Mouth”

Date:

Nashville-based artist Love You Later has made her first release in 2 years with new single “Mouth To Mouth.” The glittery alt-pop tune sees the artist struggle to pull herself out of a relationship doomed to fall apart.

Sparkly keys and lingering guitars with slow strumming start off “Mouth To Mouth,” with a dragging but boomy kick and snare drum adding to the sense of being stuck in the past. The overall tone is very reminiscent of the 90s alt-rock and dream-pop sound with keys decorating the back of the mix. Backing vocals and a switch in the drum pattern are the only changes that set the chorus apart from the first verse before the second verse strips back the guitar. Disk scratches are loosely scattered in the second verse, but aren’t seen anywhere else in the song. While the mix archives a well-rounded reflection of the lyrics, there is a sense of emptiness with the lack of low- and mid-range instruments.

In the lyrics, a relationship that is barely hanging on is seen crystal clear. The opening line “how did I find my way to your house?” is all you need to know that this a relationship built on uncertainty. Love You Later then asks “is it nostalgia that keeps me around ya?” as she tries to rationalise staying with someone who no longer loves her. The title line, “guess we could try mouth to mouth one last time,” highlights the tiredness she has over this loss but also the stubborn refusal to finish it off.

“Mouth To Mouth” by Love You Later is a return to the shimmer and glitter of the artist’s earlier works as the singer-songwriter balances her new artistic vision with her established sound.
