verygently are trying to be better in “Changin’ My Ways”

Date:

Nashville trio verygently have continued a string of soft singles with the somber release “Changin’ My Ways.” Similar to the works of The Fray and The Band CAMINO, the song brings a bleak candour to the fear of change.

verygently detailed “Changin’ My Ways” as “a song about how you know you desperately need to get your life together.” The chorus emphasises this feeling with the repeating “thought about” at the start of each line. There is a sorrowful inevitably of failure suggested in the phrase as the band struggles to better themselves. With each verse describing persistent harmful behaviours, this doubt comes to a head in the song’s bridge with the line “can’t say that I will but I swear that I might,” further highlighting a sense of unavoidable defeat.

Keeping in with their folk and singer-songwriter roots, the instrumentation of “Changin’ My Ways” is kept to a minimum, with a heavier focus on the lyrics and vocal harmonies. However, we really enjoy the recording and production of the song. The sharpness and tightness in the drums and bass guitars becomes a clear highlight as “Changin’ My Ways” progresses. The entire mix is well placed with a deliberate distance between the lighter guitars and the lower bass giving plenty of room for the vocals to sit.

“Changin’ My Ways” by verygently supports tragic lyrics with simple but sophisticated production to create a song that resonates with anyone trying to better themselves. Set to be featured on the band’s debut album SORRY SARAH, out October 9, “Changin’ My Ways” gives audiences a wonderful sneak peek of what’s to come.
