Up-and-coming band Turner release their single “Probably Not,” from their upcoming EP.
If you’re on the Indie Rock side of TikTok, you’ve probably seen the lead singer and the guitarist of Turner do acoustic covers of indie-rock and pop-punk favorites. This series, which they called “Singing drunk in your apartment,” earned them a passionate, loyal following over the last year, and they started releasing original music around the same time.
Their debut album, Waterslide, received acclaim for its humorous lyrics and fluctuating dynamics, and this new single leans even more into these qualities.
“Probably Not” is biting, emotive, and deliciously ironic. It captures the state of exasperation-turned-to-apathy after an emotional event like a breakup, when you think you might eventually gain something valuable from it, or at least you think you should, but you probably won’t.
Like many of their songs, “Probably Not” starts with a slow, somber tune, only accompanied by guitar, vocals and soft percussion. The last lines of the slow verse: “If you shove my face in it / maybe I’ll feel some regret / and I’ll never let it get this bad again,” are serious enough, but you get the first hint here that the song is more sarcastic than heartfelt. Then, the song has an abrupt change in tone. The tempo speeds up, the drums come in heavy, and Jesse Klapheke’s voice belts out “but probably not!” repeatedly in a catchy, upbeat chorus.
This song is a great one to scream along to in the car with your friends. It allows you to express your angst and have fun at the same time.. what more could you want from a song?
