It’s an all-too-common experience for most people these days: crippling anxiety, an overwhelming inner chaos that we choke down and drown out until we just can’t anymore. Danish rising star Theresa Rex gives a roaring voice to these distressing feelings on her new pop-rock anthem, “Scream.”
Rex has been steadily moving into the spotlight since the beginning of her career when she caught the ear of a passing songwriter and producer while singing jazz music in the town square. Just a few short months later, she was featured on Martin Jensen’s 2016 international mega-hit, “Solo Dance.” Her debut single, “Wild Ones,” was released in 2018, and in 2019 UK star Jonas Blue invited her to sing on his song “What I Like About You,” which is still climbing charts and making waves today.
“Scream” is Rex’s third single of the year, and her most vulnerable, offering brutal honesty and consequently solidarity for listeners who can relate. The expressive singer shared more about the song:
“I have really bad anxiety, the kind that had me calling ambulances thinking I was having a heart attack. For a while, I thought I was making it better by drinking my worries away, but it would always end up with me being too much, staying out too long, sleeping with the wrong people and hurting my own feelings.”
Making the most of a difficult situation, Rex channeled her anxieties into a propulsive, expansive pop tune that packs a punch. Laced with pulsating synths, forceful piano, polyrhythmic guitar licks and rolling drums, Rex narrates her inner turmoil: “I wanna scream / Wanted to leave / All damn night / Grinding my teeth / In too deep / Where’s my mind?” Traces of her jazz roots can still be heard in Rex’s vocal performance, which oscillates from tender and candid in the verses to bold and powerful in the chorus. That choral chant, “Break it down to build it up / You know I / Break it down to build it up,” has enormous potential to create lasting memories at a live show.
“Scream” is available to stream wherever you listen to music.
