Taylor Bickett has a knack for reflecting the lived experiences of Gen-Z in her songwriting. Bickett first gained traction from her 2022 song “QUARTER LIFE CRISIS,” which quickly became a trend on TikTok. Half a million people, including Drew Barrymore and Kevin Jonas, shared stories and photos about navigating the transition into adulthood as Bickett somberly crooned “I swear 16 was yesterday, but now I’m closer to 28.” The song captured the disgruntled zeitgeist of a generation trying to makeup for lost time post pandemic in a way not many others of the time could. Bickett has done this once again with her new single “If Only,” pivoting the focus to the current dating landscape.
Telling us about the song, Bickett says “Simply put, ‘If Only’ is a situationship song. It’s about falling for someone who can’t make up their mind, who gives excuses, saying “if only… we could be together.” It’s not romantic, we’re not star-crossed lovers, it’s a cop-out.” The concept of a situtationship is nothing new despite the recent coining of the phrase. But what the rise in situationship culture points to, is a deep fear of commitment. Of simultaneously wanting something so bad but never having the courage to make it a reality.
The music video released alongside the song shows Bickett in a fairytale garden singing wistfully about the confused state this entanglement has left her in. Soon the garden walls grow, looming over Bickett as the sun sets cloaking her in darkness. Bickett is left sprinting through the gardens maze like walls trying to get out, it’s like realizing youre with someone who isn’t right for you just a little too late.
