Yearning has not gone out of style. In fact, with Gen Z, it has come back full force, and rising indie-pop artists are at the head of the movement. Dani Stocksdale, a Mexican-American artist from Los Angeles, has launched a new wave with her new hit single, “Magnetic.”
While most artists focus on making their songs pop with catchy rhythms and shiny visuals, Stocksdale knows the silent strength that lies in the lyrics. She is a master of words, exploring the grey areas of being in your 20s with imagery, conversational storytelling, and emotional specificity.
“Magnetic” is all about yearning, about that “magnetic” pull you feel with someone — a force that feels almost magical, “meant to be.” There’s no need for words because your body, your feelings, do the talking for you.
Stocksdale hit the bullseye with her song, making it easy to click on the loop button and keep it playing over and over again, imagining making eye contact with your crush at a crowded party as they do in the romance music videos or in the romcoms from the early 2000s that they just don’t seem to make anymore.
Romance doesn’t look the way it does through film or music or books anymore. But little by little, rising artists are doing their best to bring it back. Stocksdale has mastered that ability, and if “Magnetic” is any indication of what’s to come for her career, I can’t wait to hear what comes next.
