In the midst of summer, you sit outside with a magazine and a tall glass of lemonade trying to soak up all the good the sun has to offer. Summertime bliss is underway, and all the cloudy days seem those of the past as the sun cradles you delicately, making you feel like everything is going to be okay. There is truly nothing like this feeling.
However, this summer fantasy is far from the summer days the whimsical, nostalgic indie pop musician Aimée Fatale experiences. In fact, they are the exact opposite. In “Summertime Ain’t Easy,” Fatale grapples with the fact that the summertime bliss everyone else seems to be entranced by during the sun-filled months seems to roll right over her, leaving her with clouds and feeling blue.
Fatale decides to be a little clever in the composition of “Summertime Ain’t Easy.” Describing the track as a disguised “tropical happy song in the spirit of The Beach Boys,” Fatale weaves her melancholy lyrics in with catchy, feel-good instrumentation, suggesting that her summertime blues have manifested themselves into a personal anthem that needed to see the light of day. “A heaviness you can dance to” is the perfect description Fatale uses to explain this contrasting lyrical-instrumental relationship.
She may be trying to participate in this joyous summertime feeling by tuning into her Beach Boys side, but her reality finds its way to shine through lyrically, making her attempt to fit in stand as a beaming contradiction. “I think the sun just passes by me / While it shines right on you” is the reality comes to fruition in the chorus. It really can’t get more honest than that.
Although Fatale’s discography is fresh, with her oldest release dating to Sept. 2025, she has already established herself as an artist you won’t regret putting your trust in. Her sound comes from a ballad-swaying, fantasy realm bathed in themes that come straight from the heart; making her human, making her “a modern girl”—also the title of her debut EP released in February. All she can ever do is try to make sense of everything that’s coming at her, tuning in to her most honest feelings, which is exactly what she does in her strong, well-rounded debut EP that makes you believe she’s a veteran musician.
Whether you feel like a personal cloud is following you while the sun seems to shine on everyone else or you tend to feel as if others have better odds in life, “Summertime Ain’t Easy” is worth a listen. And if you do press play, you will most likely find yourself listening to Aimée Fatale’s entire discography while becoming engulfed in her sound (speaking from experience).
