Melodic Music Monday: May 19

Date:

Every Monday, we bring you a playlist filled with new tracks the Melodic staff has been listening to on repeat. Hear some of our latest obsessions below:

——

GIVĒON, “RATHER BE” – Continuing his sophomore chapter, seven-time Grammy nominee GIVĒON has released “RATHER BE,” accompanied by a music video directed by Loris Russier. The R&B ballad, marked by strong horn instrumentals and heartfelt lyrics, was produced by Sevn Thomas, Maneesh, Matthew Burnett, Jeff Gitelman, and Jahaan Sweet.

– Taylor Swinton

——

Loveless, “Step Back” – “Step Back” is about being trapped in thought. Through strong vocals, catchy melodies, and leading guitar, Loveless wallows in the regret of past mistakes. The lyrics wrestle with the idea of being caught between letting these feelings go or cycling through them forever.

– Emma Celenza

——

Sleep Theory, “Gravity” – Sleep Theory isn’t content with just going heavy on their new album; they also explore moments of vulnerability with surprising nuance and a softer side of things. “Gravity” and “Afterglow” slow the pace, offering softer textures and a more palatable R&B and rock sound. “Gravity,” a song the band premiered mere hours before the album release, brings a genre-blurring R&B-meets-twang vocal approach that’s unexpectedly not rock, but it works.

– Victoria Goodwin

——

The Kooks, “Sunny Baby” – Anchored by the tender single “Sunny Baby,” a tribute to frontman Luke Pritchard’s family life, the album has been praised for its lush harmonies and introspective tone. The Times (UK) called the track “perfect for the start of Spring,” while the dreamy accompanying video captures its warmth and nostalgia.
