The long-anticipated glimpse of Heaven you’ve been waiting for is here: Mannequin Pussy has finally done a Tiny Desk performance.
A true force of nature, the four-piece act — led by Marisa “Missy” Dabice — took over the tiny space with their overwhelming energy and authenticity. Typically raw and unreserved on stage, Missy offers a masterclass in powerful yet restrained vocals as the band opens with their hit “I Don’t Know You.”
Performing a total of four tracks, the band followed with “Split Me Open” before Missy paused to speak, joking how they had been invited twice but the first time had been denied. She continued, choosing words that were poignant and charged with the passion this band consistently maintains, addressing the obvious rage growing across society.
Addressing the rise of white supremacy along with other oppressive tensions in our society, Missy gathers the crowd into a collective hush, reminding them not to allow numbness to take over in a challenging world.
“I know that it hurts so much to sit with all of that rage in you because you don’t know where to put it. But the thing about rage,” Missy pauses, “is that the longer you ignore it, the more it grows in your body like a poison.”
“That’s exactly what they count upon, because our unexamined rage that turns to poison in our bodies is exactly how this country continues to create white supremacists and sexists and homophobes and transphobes and xenophobes and people who think immigrants are a problem.”
She directly addresses the crowd then, asking them to honor that rage and to join in a primal scream as loud as they can. The camera shifts to a crowd view, followed by a deafening scream that fills the tiny but at-capacity room.
Mannequin Pussy concluded their performance with fan favorites “Loud Bark” and “Romantic,” proving they are not choosing to take up any less space in the music industry any time soon. Watch their performance to let out your rage and find some relief today.
