Fright Years find certainy in “Never Been Wrong”

Date:

The UK’s Fright Years have returned following the release of their debut EP, Still Life, with the new synth-pop single “Never Been Wrong.” With its cinematic sounds and catchy lyrics, the song is sure to find lovers in listeners of Florence + The Machine, CHVRCHES and Simple Minds.

“Never Been Wrong” starts off with a punchy drum kit and cinematic synths. The enveloping synths kick-start the larger-than-life tone of the song but are stripped down in the verses to ensure that they don’t oversaturate “Never Been Wrong.” In these verses, Fright Years instead opt for a smooth bass, which gives a nice contrast to the sharper textures of the guitars and synths. This change of pace also helps highlight the grandiose choruses and synth leads. After the second chorus, a fuzzy but sharp guitar solo gives another textural contrast to the song before more organic percussion sounds are added to stop it from sounding repetitive.

Fright Years’ frontwoman Juliette Kelly described the song as having that “feeling of having an easy chemistry with the world around you.” In the chorus, this message is loud and clear with the repeating lines, “When I’ve ever been wrong / I’ve never been so right,” showing a controlled certainty over one’s actions. The bridge’s “I am confessing / I knew the second I left” also emphasises this clarity as Fright Years end the song with the two lines overlapping one another.

Fright Year’s “Never Been Wrong” showcases a band that has grown in confidence and resolution. This growth can also be heard live, when the band makes festival stops across the UK along with shows supported acts by Fatherson and Lucia and the Best Boys in the coming months.
