Mae Krell returns with pensive new single “tooth fairy”

Date:

Last year, singer-songwriter Mae Krell started dropping singles that would later end up on her newest EP, imposter syndrome.  Released in February of this year, imposter syndrome touched on themes like relationships, addiction, and self-doubt, making it an emotional listen.  Tastemakers like PRIDE even described it as “an intimate and heart-wrenching dissection of the unavoidable self-doubt we all experience in our 20s.”  Mae’s fans had time in the proceeding spring and summer months to recover, but now that we are heading into “sad girl autumn,” they will have to compose themselves yet again after hearing Mae’s latest single, “tooth fairy.”

Pensive and intimate, “tooth fairy” is about letting someone go.  As the sounds of gentle percussion float around Mae’s words, we are taken back to those pressing moments when she realized what was unfolding before her.  Critically, she sings, “You said I wasn’t capable / I think our outlooks varied” and “I can’t help but think I could’ve healed / 20/20’s a lot to carry.”  She accepts that she needs to move on when we get to the bridge, however, singing, “I hope one day I’ll have to think twice just to remember your name.”  You can listen below.

About “tooth fairy,” Mae shared,

“I wrote it after I found out that someone who used to be my best friend moved to the city where I grew up.  It felt like tearing open an old wound that I didn’t know I had, and also put me in a spot to question: If the chance were to arise, would I want to give them a second chance?  That’s something I’m still trying to figure out.”

You can listen to “tooth fairy” on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud.
