Lucy Dacus is offering fans an intimate look at her roots: today, the indie-rock singer-songwriter released a self-directed music video for her latest single, “Planting Tomatoes,” following an exclusive sneak peek screening last night in New York City.
Filmed entirely in her hometown of Richmond, Virginia, the music video unfolds as a love letter to the places that have shaped Dacus. The audience is taken on a scenic tour, unfolding through several of Dacus’ favorite local landmarks, including Hollywood Cemetery, Dogwood Dell, and the James River Park Pony Pasture.
Local production crew SpangTV was recruited alongside creative director Jordan Rodericks and DP David Meussig, who have both worked with Dacus previously on the “Hot & Heavy” music video. According to Dacus, the track is meant to honor the daily effort it can take to stay present and grateful while facing the inevitable mortality of life, both for oneself and for those we love.
A true community effort, the visual project features her father, close friends, and students from the nearby Richmond-based youth performing arts group SPARC. Virginia locals will get a chance to celebrate the hometown release on July 30, with a special sold-out screening and Q&A at Richmond’s own historic Byrd Theatre, moderated by Paul Major from SPARC. Next up for Dacus is the kick off of her largest North American summer tour to date. The run will kick off Friday, July 10, at Winnipeg Folk Festival, and feature headline shows across cities like Madison, Toronto, Asbury Park, and more. She is also scheduled to appear this summer at festivals such as Outside Lands and Bumbershoot.
Most notably, this tour run marks Dacus’ first-ever symphony performances. Taking the stage at Chicago’s Millenium Park on July 19, Dacus will be joined by the Chicago Philharmonic and indie favorites Ratboys. Additionally, she will take over the Hollywood Bowl on September 13 alongside the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and indie darlings Cat Power. These dates will showcase new orchestral arrangements of tracks from her latest album, Forever Is A Feeling.
As with her previous tours, Dacus is partnering with The Ally Coalition, ensuring that $1 from every headline ticket sold will directly support organizations serving queer and trans youth across North America.
