FOR FANS OF: Deafhaven, Loathe, Poison the Well
Having only just emerged earlier this year with a pair of unrelenting tracks — “A Cruel Separation” and “Madrid” — New Jersey’s Vita Ruina has officially signed to Mind Over Matter Records. To mark the occasion, they’ve dropped their newest single, “Modern Frames.”
The track immediately sends the listener hurling into a sonic world of aggressive beats and fast, sharp guitars. Frontman Bobby Bates anchors the chaos, shifting from gut-wrenching screams to more tender, clean vocals while digging into the terrifyingly relatable experience of watching your life’s foundation crack open. Bates also directed the track’s performance video, capturing the band in stark, flickering light to mirror the song’s existential claustrophobia.
“At its heart “Modern Frames” is about discovering that while the ‘frames’ we live in might break, change, or evolve, genuine human connection and the authenticity of the lessons we learn from those experiences can endure,” The band says of the track. “At a deeper level, “Modern Frames” explores the fragile structures we build to define ourselves – our identities, memories, relationships, and the expectations that shape who we believe we’re meant to be. The song reflects on what happens when those foundations begin to fracture under the weight of trauma, time, and change – forcing us to confront who we are beyond the roles or ‘frames’ we’ve created for ourselves. And as that certainty dissolves and reality blurs and our ‘frames’ change, we find ourselves constantly searching for some sort of authenticity.”
Engineered by Brian Robbins, the single leads a physical two-song 7” dropping September 18th. True to old-school scene roots, the B-side is exclusive to a limited vinyl pressing — so if you want to see the picture of what Vita Ruina is capable of, grab the preorder via Mind Over Matter here.
