Alternative pop duo joan released their vulnerable new single “alibi” and announced that their new album this won’t last forever will be released on September 25th via Photo Finish Records.
The emotional track serves as an authentic and honest account of a toxic relationship that felt doomed from the start. The duo, which consists of Alan Benjamin Thomas and Steven Rutherford, compares the hurt they’ve experienced at the hands of their partner to a premeditated crime. With lyrics like, “Was this always in the plan you had? / A scapegoat to take the blame for what you did and what you said,” joan expresses how the situation has left them feeling blindsided and betrayed. It’s an anthem for anyone who’s ever felt emotionally and mentally drained by a partner’s actions that feel almost calculated. Speaking on “alibi,” they share,
“We wrote ‘alibi’ in the dingy basement of some co-write that we did a while back. It was dark, and I swear there was only one light in the whole room. The person we were writing with for something else ended up having to leave for some reason, so we just started writing and ended up with ‘alibi.’ The room felt like an interrogation room so we kind of used that theme to start something and it just stuck. We ended up with an honestly beautiful song about heartbreak.”
The music video for “alibi” took inspiration from the duo’s writing session and was shot in a real interrogation room. It features performance shots of joan alongside the story of this toxic connection, complete with flipped chairs and tables.
The release of “alibi” follows a series of previously released singles from the upcoming record, including “body language,” “face” and more. With the release of this won’t last forever coming up this September, joan speaks on the meaning behind the record explaining,
“It’s about actually looking up in your life and realizing that nothing lasts forever. So breathe and take in the moment. Whether good or bad, you gotta know that it won’t last. This song was an important reminder of that. Hope it is to you too.”
With over 200 million global streams, joan continues to harvest and evolve their artistry amongst the alt-pop scene with their emotional honesty and sonic nostalgia. Pre-save for this won’t last forever can be found here.
