Leading up to his fifth studio album Burnout, BoyWithUke released “Gaslight” on Oct. 11 with an accompanying music video. Over a song about leaving a toxic relationship, viewers can see Charley Yang, BoyWithUke’s real identity which he revealed last year, become haunted by his iconic masked persona: “You hurt me with malice again / But I know in my heart, what you are is a monster / And we can’t be together, a shame / Rather die and be alone than to love and be in pain.”
Once again, he seamlessly transitions from a chill melody with quiet singing to a full-on live drum beat with many rock layers that have him belting out lyrics like in his past single “Ghost.”
In his music video for “Gaslight,” viewers can see Charley Yang trying to escape his masked persona. By the end of the video, he defeats BoyWithUke and burns his blue-eyed mask. With this cinematic production, Yang officially kicks off the end of his BoyWithUke era and shows he is ready to embrace his next chapter as a musician. While he has strayed from the ukulele, Charley Yang stays true to his confessional pop brand that BoyWithUke fans love while showing off new capabilities in music production, like his alt-rock chops present in “Gaslight.”
On November 15, BoyWithUke will release Burnout via AWAL Recordings. His next project is promising and could solidify Charley as the next big artist to look out for as his past singles show that his new style of raw lyrics with smooth beat transitions sounds amazing. Even though it will be the last album under BoyWithUke, he’ll still maintain his fanbase who fell in love with his bedroom pop sound and will continue to appreciate his lyricism as he grows as an artist.
