As a little kid, you often feel like everything is black and white. When you grow up, those colors and feelings change and so does the garden. For singer-songwriter Devon Gabriella, the garden looks a lot different on her latest single, “The Garden.”
Whether you’re experiencing a new relationship, a different phase in life or a changed dream, how Gabriella views her stagnated life is ever-changing. Known for her heart-wrenching ballads, she truly embraces her raw and earnest songwriting on “The Garden.” She sings, “In this garden, thought I found what I wanted / But I’m right back wherе I started, so cut me dry ’cause now I have to go.”
Gabriella’s voice takes center stage against the backdrop of soft acoustic guitar, even while she learns that even things we used to love or wanted so badly to have in our lives don’t always stay.
As the song nears its conclusion, she sings, “I was green, thought the wind blew one direction / And I’m still learnin’ lessons all the time…But it’s time for me to grow before I die / I’ll be fine.” She realizes that growing up is beautiful, messy and overwhelmingly terrifying all at the same time, but that’s just the way it is. From outgrowing who we are and the people we meet, everyone is changing. But that doesn’t mean what we loved wasn’t beautiful before. And for Gabriella, flowers grow and die before they regenerate into something else that can be magical if you let it.
