Indie-rock band Spacey Jane kickstart their new era with their hazy new single “All the Noise.” The new track marks the first single from their upcoming album, If That Makes Sense, releasing May 9th.
Caleb Harper’s Australian-drenched accents paired with distorted indie guitars emulate the essence of early The 1975. “All the Noise” tries to drown out the pain with walls of sound: dreamy melodies through complex layers of harmonies on pre-choruses, thrilling guitar riffs by Ashton Hardman-Le Cornu in verses, consistently patient drum beats by Kieran Lama, and enticing bass lines from Peppa Lane.
While this wall of sound invigorates the senses, teasing away music from noise, Harper’s lyrics themselves also begrudgingly trap surrounding noise in word. Harper dwells on the dynamics of his parents’ relationship, the pitfalls in this relationship, and the worry of replicating their dynamics in his own future. Harper pens heartbreaking lyrics that reflect on his own upbringing and where it will take him: ”And even though I can’t see why you couldn’t leave it / I don’t know differently so I’m bound to repeat it.”
Harper continues this sentiment throughout the chorus through clever strings of metaphors like, “A getaway car with its brakes cut down the street / And a head full of nothing, a dream without sleep.” The track itself finishes abruptly, perhaps opening the space for his journey to continue as he leaves behind unfinished thoughts. His uncertainty of the future becomes not just a device in this track but a beacon of hope that can lead into a more desirable future.
This guitar-heavy track jolts listeners into Spacey Jane’s new era, inviting experimentation and groove into their new project to come. Modernized to the likes of Inhaler, The Wombats or Wallows, Spacey Jane joins the likes of many who continue to push the boundaries of indie rock.
