Along with an announcement of their Model and More Tour, Wallows have released their first single of 2025 promised to be “Your New Favorite Song.” The Los Angeles group have come far from their early bedrock days and this new single only highlights Wallows’ growth in music production and songwriting.
An easy drums and guitar progression begin the song with a relaxed feeling but the introduction of a horns section and melodic synths give the tune a 70s-inspired soft-rock twist reminiscent of Clairo’s 2024 album Charm. The dreamy vocal delivery of lead singer Dylan Minnette falls well between a delicate piano and panned synths. Fans of Wallows more fast-paced indie rock may not enjoy the slow tempo, with “Your New Favorite Song” heavily leaning on the psychedelic-folk elements that the band dappled in on their 2024 album Model. Despite this, there is a gusto by the end, letting the song have a release of tension built up by its anxious lyrics.
A major development within Wallows’ discography has been their songwriting and this new single highlights the balance between vulnerability and fun that the trio have mastered. The nonchalant intro is quickly undercut by the lyrics “We can think of the years that go by / Or we could count all the tears that we’ve cried,” giving insight to a relationship fraught with uncertainty and fear. Rather than try to work through these destructive thoughts, Wallows end with the chorus “Well I, I, don’t wanna know.” The rectorial questions laced throughout the single give the impression of a journal entry, blending well with the slow build of instrumentation.
With more tour dates and music on the way, 2025 seems like yet another eventful and exciting year for Wallows.
