Angel Olsen brought serenity to adoring fans at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, NJ Monday evening. Just off the PATH train, attendees came from New York City and surrounding areas just to see Olsen perform. The crowd was warm and welcoming, often yelling out jokes or small bouts of affection in between songs, to which Olsen would laugh and respond to with witty remarks of her own. This tour was her second US run with her latest album Big Time, which dived further into her smooth country influences and confident composure. Olsen sprinkled older hits throughout the set as well, joking that she was going to play a song she had “just written last night” before jumping into her most popular track “Shut Up Kiss Me” off MY WOMAN (2016).
Olsen showcases a radiant grandeur in her stage presence and despite covering heavier topics of love and grief onstage, sheds a certain coolness that is seemingly effortless. The chemistry between her and her bandmates is palpable as they navigate the set together with ease, and her relationships with fans can be witnessed from any point in the crowd, but is especially potent from the front, where captivated fans lining the barricade dedicate their unwavering attention.
