Weekly Roundup: August 22

Date:

Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to. We’ve been absent for a couple of weeks, but are back in full force with some pop gems that are sure to become your new favorites.
Here are some of the highlights:

1. “indieedgycool” – GAYLE
“I think I’m original and everybody’s copying me.” Oh, to be an indie/edgy/cool/kid. It’s not totally clear whether or not GAYLE is being mildly self-deprecating (while in on the joke) or taking shameless shots at those who wear chokers, ‘vintage kicks’, and borrow money from their parents, but the result is surely catchy.

2. “On The Drive Home” – NIKI
With an emotional delivery that isn’t totally unlike Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver’s License,” NIKI’s “On The Drive Home” tugs at the heartstrings and weaves together a beautiful and simple tapestry of sound. An acoustic guitar carries the entire song along with NIKI’s subtle, but very much controlled and pitch-perfect, voice.

3.  “Pink Venom” – BLACKPINK
This week’s challenge is to try and not get hyped when you hear the chants of “BLACKPINK” at the beginning of the group’s latest single, “Pink Venom.” After the build-up, the song breaks into an infectious beat that definitely had us thinking of “Pon De Replay”… only to have a Google search confirm that this song does in fact interpolate Rihanna’s 2005 debut single.

4. “Without Me” – Clifton
As described by Clifton himself, “This is my first move into an entirely new sound, focusing on a combination of hip hop elements and pop vocals.” The Australian artist’s new experiment seems to be a good move as “Without Me” is hard-pressed to get out of our heads. We’re definitely getting a bit of an MGK vibe with this track— take a listen and hear for yourself.
