When a friend goes through a breakup, you feel obligated to take their “side.” This means you don’t hang out with the ex, you don’t talk to the ex – basically, you act like the ex never existed. It can be temporary, lasting only until the friend fully gets over the ex. But if the friend was really hurt by this ex, then it’s best to stay away. What if the ex released a really cool song, though? What happens then?
On “kinda smacks,” GAYLE teams up with Royal & the Serpent to tell us that their music choices are not easily influenced by who is and who is not in a relationship. They know better than to support the ex-boyfriend, but they are also only human – and victims to great music. With their sassy and fierce attitudes, they sing, “Your ex-boyfriend’s music kinda smacks and it makes me kinda sad ‘cause I can’t stop listening, listening / I know I said that it was wack, but I gotta take it back ‘cause I can’t stop listening, listening.” If the ex’s music is as catchy as this song, then we can’t blame them. “kinda smacks” comes after an eventful 2023 for GAYLE and Royal & the Serpent. Last year, GAYLE released a handful of singles, including “i don’t sleep as good as i used to,” “leave me for dead,” and “butterflies” from the Barbie soundtrack. She also opened up for P!nk on select dates of her European tour, opened for Taylor Swift on a little thing called ‘The Eras Tour,’ and wrapped her ‘The Scared But Trying Tour’ at the end of the year. Meanwhile, Royal & the Serpent released her series of double-sided singles, starting with RAT TRAP 1: the blueprint and ending with RAT TRAP 4: the burden. She also opened for Demi Lovato and Fall Out Boy on their tours and ran her first ever headline tour.
