Weekly Roundup: July 18

Date:

Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to. We have all sorts of catchy tunes this go-around, including a song that compares a broken heart to a car from the late 90’s.
Here are some of the highlights:

1. “ITS ALL GOOD” – Neon Dreams
The world could really use some positivity right now. Enter “ITS ALL GOOD,” the latest single from Canadian duo Neon Dreams, a moniker that is just as shiny and colorful as the sound of their music. The dance-ability and fun of this track is undeniable, and fans of such artists as OneRepublic or AJR are sure to feel right at home while listening.

2. “Bang Bang, Honey Honey” – Cortney Dixon
With a distinctive voice and a catchy chorus, Cortney Dixon’s “Bang Bang Honey Honey” is sure to get lodged in your brain. Dreamy, swirling guitars and garage-rock drums create the perfect pop/rock feel to Dixon’s high-pitched vocal. I hate to compare her tone to the Chipmunks, because that sounds like a diss, but it’s not supposed to be! It’s a quality that makes Dixon stand out. Fans of Charly Bliss, Wet Leg, or Beabadoobee will dig this one.

3.  “Garden Song” – thea wang
This is folk pop at its finest. thea wang crafts a gorgeous and subtle song with hints of Regina Spektor and folklore-era Taylor Swift woven throughout. I challenge you not to feel a little choked up when the artist reaches the pre-chorus: “He looked into the eyes he once knew/ she looked back and said, ‘it’s all for you.’” The emotional punch is not as much in the lyrics as it is in the delivery, but it comes together beautifully.

4. “’98 Nissan” – Josh Fudge
This song is so clever, from incorporating the noise of a car alarm that sounds when you leave your car door open with the lights on to the lyric: “you left your car door open/ I saw it runnin’ with the lights on/ and it got under my skin but who would break into a ’98 Nissan?/ I left my heart wide open/ maybe I came on too strong/ but in a couple of weeks with a couple of drinks we’ll be back to square one.” Fudge somehow makes a metaphor for breaking another person’s heart out of the other’s carelessness when exiting their vehicle and it works so well (all while being super sweet ear candy).
