The Band Camino returns to Philadelphia, more themselves than they’ve ever been

Date:

It’s been a few years since The Band Camino visited Philadelphia. Now, one heartfelt EP and a third album later, the Nashville-based trio returns with more songs than they knew what to do with and even more fans than they could count. Following their “Tour Before The Tour”, the group celebrated the release of the first portion of a two-part album, the first being NeverAlways.

Teased this past spring in video splices and audio clips, the new project includes singles “Infinity”, “Baggy Jeans”, and “Stupid Questions”, along with the popular “What You Can’t Have”. Fortunately for Philadelphia, the band hit all the marks and more, incorporating a surprise cover and even a saxophone solo (or two) to really bring their record to life.

Indie-folk singer/songwriter Ethan Tasch and his band began the night, followed by San Diego’s indie-pop trio Almost Monday. The group brought a youthful and fun energy to the stage, performing crowd favorites like “sun keeps on shining” and “cough drops”. Thanking both Tasch and The Band Camino, Almost Monday was a joy to see perform, giving the audiences fresh, uplifting songs to add to playlists to fight the winter blues.

NeverAlways begins with an ambient “HasJustBegun”, much like the setlist. The track plays as The Band Camino takes the stage. Their set began with a blue burst of confetti, choosing their usual closing song “Daphne Blue” to begin the night with. Following with “Infinity”, “Hush Hush”, then “Stupid Questions”, the energy was high from the get-go. And as if “Know Me” couldn’t get any better, the band was joined by saxophonist Saxi Rose, who added something we didn’t know we needed to the already emotional ballad.

What seems to have become a Camino staple is the stripped versions of a select few songs in the middle of the set, this time including a 2017 single “Berenstein” and a cover of Justin Bieber’s “Daisies”. From their EP from the same year, “Heaven” also made a welcome appearance following the acoustic set. While the set leaned more into the new album than anything else, these unexpected longtime fan favorites did not go unnoticed. Taking the time to thank “The Crew Camino” as well as the fans for showing up, every time they come to Philadelphia the band expresses their gratitude.

Between friendship bracelets and embracing The Band Camino’s fan-led project, the alt-rock trio has reached more people than they ever have, surely ready to do it all over again. And Philadelphia will be more than happy to have them.
