sombr continues to question his feelings in new single, “we never dated”

Date:

Kicking it into high gear, sombr — the project of 19-year-old singer-songwriter Shane Boose — released another single, “we never dated,” following his immense success with chart-climbing tracks, “back to friends” and “undressed.” This single is no stranger to the vulnerable path he has gone down, as he continues to dive into the complexities and confusion tied to love and romance.

In “we never dated,” sombr uses everything in his toolbox, from harmonies to honest songwriting, to seek out the answer to why he’s met with heartache and spiraling thoughts despite the unofficial status of his relationship. In the chorus, sombr asks the question, “How come we never even dated / But I still find my self thinking of you daily,” to seemingly try and make sense of the weight he’s feeling from this undesirable nature of young love.

Hints of yearning for a relationship that could’ve been make their way into this already complicated situation, with sombr repeating the line, “I can’t make you love me / No I can’t make you love me / Babe I can’t make you love me / No I can’t make you love me.” The theme of trying to clear the fogginess between a platonic vs. romantic relationship is not only making its first appearance in this single, but rather is being carried over from “back to friends” and “undressed,” creating a new of era of emotional exploration for sombr.
