Snorkeler returns with angsty breakup bop, “Slow Burn”

Date:

Canadian rocker Curtis Heimburger, formerly of Mom Rock, has returned with his old/new band Snorkeler. Heimburger resurrected the project, originally formed in 2020, with an angsty breakup bop titled “Slow Burn.” It’s the first of a three-track EP that will release over the summer and into the fall. The accompanying music video is expected to release two weeks after the single, which officially dropped on Friday, July 25.

Heimburger shared the deeper meaning of “Slow Burn” in a recent statement:

“It sums up feelings of remorse after something big has ended and the grudges you hold against people that started out as your good friEnds/partners/band mates, turned sour. At first, anger says it’s the other person’s fault and that you did nothing wrong. But as that subsides, the realization that the finger can also be pointed at you and your actions kicks in.”

Mom Rock fans were saddened when the band announced their split in January, and equally excited when Heimburger revived Snorkeler’s Instagram page in March. While “Slow Burn” may be a pointed reflection on Mom Rock’s breakup, it’s a familiar story for anyone who’s lost a friend, partner, or family member: “What happened to every Friday night? / We’d go out and sing those songs we liked / But now we don’t and now it shows / That I just hate the view of your face.”

“Slow Burn” gives big Weezer energy with the slower, chugging rhythm. It contains traces of Snorkeler’s influences like Djo and Modest Mouse, while holding true to the quirks and intricacies of Heimburger’s writing style in a fresh, new sound. A soaring guitar riff, emotional vocals, and an incredibly singable hook ensure that this song will be a fan favorite in Snorkeler’s live set.

The band’s prescription for enjoying “Slow Burn” is as follows: “Dust off that old Bluetooth speaker your mom gave you for ur birthday and head down to the nearest body of water with a lawn chair you fished out of the dumpster behind your apartment.”

Sounds like the perfect plan for a summer afternoon. “Slow Burn” is available to stream wherever you listen to music.
