Scene Queen calls out fragile masculinity on disco-infused single “Platform Shoes”

Date:

From the final installment of disco summer, Scene Queen has one important message to get across: “The Queen doesn’t stifle her presence.”

“Platform Shoes” takes a stab at men with fragile egos, yet again flawlessly combining her signature metalcore-infused riffs with an infectious disco-inspired beat. Following the explosion of queer joy on her previous single “L-Shaped Couch,” this new addition to the singer’s retro era radiates a bold, unapologetic energy that embraces making men feel small in comparison. Scene Queen shares,

“As my final installment of disco summer, I wanted to make a song I felt like a lot of women can relate to. Having the massive personality I do, I noticed while dating, a lot of men think they want someone who is independent and opinionated. That charisma is something you’re initially attracted to, but as time goes on, a lot of men start to feel insecure that they’re not the ‘alpha’ in the relationship.”

The bimbocore pioneer’s scathing, witty lyricism is on full display with this one, especially through lines like Cause you start looking like you’re five foot two / When you talk like you do, need some platform shoes” and “I will not change who I am / For the comfort of a man.” The groovy anthem aims to combat the plague of male insecurity in a way that Scene Queen knows best, with unrelenting confidence and pride in her femininity. She adds,

“They’re about equality until it makes them question their masculinity. This song is about not letting men like this make you smaller. And I say all that in the most me way I could’ve, calling those men short. Because at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter how tall a guy is – men take note – it’s about how confident a man is that makes them hot.”

While “Platform Shoes” marks the end of disco summer, the next Scene Queen era is just around the corner. In an Instagram post shared alongside the song’s release, she promises a return to her more aggressive roots, declaring,

“So dance to this little disco metal number because we’re going heavy next.”

Scene Queen is currently on her Hot Shows In Your Area Tour across the UK and Europe, continuing through September 15th with a show in Germany. Tickets and information for the remaining dates of this UK/EU headliner can be found here.
