Folly Tree is waking up from a dream in “Danger”

Date:

Producer and singer-songwriter Folly Tree has released her first single ahead of her upcoming album, “Danger.” A mix of indie-pop and alternative R&B, the song tells the tale of discovering someone you thought was supposed to protect you may not have the best intentions.

There is a heavy focus on textures in the production of “Danger,” with each instrument recorded and mixed to have its own distinct space. Starting off the song is a reverbed guitar to give the sense of a large space.

As the first verse starts, there is a smooth transition to a warmer, tighter-sounding snare drum and bass. In the pre-chorus and chorus, keys and distorted backing vocals are peppered in both the front and back of the mix, acting as a bridge to the contrasting melodic guitars and rhythmic bass and drums. Folly Tree is able to add and subtract elements to each phase of the song in a subtle and sparse way that keeps “Danger” interesting and engaging.

In the first verse of the song we see a home on guard with the opening lines “My dogs sit at my doorstep / Watching my back.” We soon realise why there is such worry when the chorus kicks in and Folly Tree declares an “old saviour…danger.” The entire song is about this single realisation as the singer sheds light on someone she was thought was protecting her. This is highlighted in the second verse’s “mad eyes carved the unspoken,” giving listeners a clear image of the growing anxiety and well-placed paranoia Folly Tree has.

“Danger” by Folly Tree is the first single released in anticipation for her upcoming album. While the album’s title and release date are yet to be known, “Danger” gives a clear indicator of what to expect from Folly Tree in the future.
