In May, Cade Hoppe was ready to “Still Turn This Around,” as he gave us a hopeful song about pursuing your biggest dreams. The LA-based singer-songwriter then visited “Lake Michigan” in July, where he reflected on the importance of adaptation. Both songs contained Hoppe’s familiar and intimate indie-pop style, but they also introduced fans to an explorational and experimental side of Hoppe’s artistry. He is gearing up to release his new album, Safer at a Distance, later this year, which will focus on the evolving relationship Hoppe has with music.
Listeners venture further into the world of Safer at a Distance with “Crashland.” Produced by Hoppe and his longtime collaborator Harper James, this new single is a lush indie-pop anthem about chasing a connection that is not meant to last. Against the antsy drums, lively pop beats, and decadent guitar lines, Hoppe entertains the inevitable. He sings, “Finally feeling alive / We’re gonna burn the whole world down till it’s just you and I,” aware of the destruction that will occur if the connection remains. Hoppe reminds us that while all the red flags are waving, it’s still tempting to ignore them and indulge in the chase.
About “Crashland,” Hoppe shares,
“This is a song about being star-crossed. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how many warning signs you get—you’ve got to learn the hard way.”
